Preservation vs. Conservation
Historically, the objective of many land trusts has been the preservation of large-scale, sensitive ecosystems from any and all forms of development, extraction or harvesting. The objective underlying the creation of Living Forest Communities is the conservation of these same ecosystems by creating working forests and sustainably harvesting less timber than the forest produces. The Trust for Sustainable Forestry and Living Forest Communities acknowledge that a significant number of economic and social activities can and should occur in a sustainable forest. Recently, some of the older land trusts have also realized that the severe restrictions that they have placed on forest thinning and selective harvesting has resulted in forests with very little new growth or species variation. These forests may be more susceptible to infestations, disease or fire.
